Just checked its a 7 hour train journey from holyhead to southhampton..only 1 change in wolverhampton so easy enough.
That gets you in around 7.30 pm from the early ferry 8a.m / or the swift 8.45 both possible with the times xx
October 10, 2011 at 1:54 pm #117264HawkeyeMemberEarlier this year, when my brother informed me that his wife had the same form of breast cancer that took her mother and aunties, Iwas understandably concerned. Because of the family history, she immediately opted for a double mastectomy, then underwent intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy, only completing her treatment in the last couple of weeks. 10 days ago my brother went into hospital for a routine disc operation (they live in the UK) that he was supposed to spend 2 days in hospital for. It appears that the surgical team screwed up quite badly and he is now paralysed from the neck down. We don’t yet know what the future holds but they have said that best case scenario is that he will be months in hospital undergoing gruelling hydrotherapy rehabilitation. It’s too early to know whether he will ever walk again or regain much movement. They have a four year old son. Apparantly the surgeon has admitted an error to a certain extent. 2 weeks ago, she was the patient and he was the carer. Now, she has to find the strength to support him while raising a son as well. I saw a poster the other day, it read "you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have"! They have no real support network of family over there so we are all trying to do what we can and when we can. Life can sure be cruel.

October 10, 2011 at 2:31 pm #117268JedtKeymasterSo sorry to hear that. thats really tough what they are going through. hope the rehab will work for him and that he will be back on his feet again. makes all the little things pale into insignificance . 🙁
October 10, 2011 at 2:40 pm #117270HawkeyeMemberThanks Chewie, Kjmam, I think strength and positive thoughts will be the fuel that gets them through it.
I was just checking comparison sights for flights into Southampton airport (ryanair and aer lingus don’t fly there) and one kind site offered to give me a great deal if I only have 2 stopovers (london and paris!) for €2,650!
Hospital are arranging taxis for his wife to get back and forth so that is something.
I just know that when I walk in to see him I will take the piss and start slagging him off for trying to get out of work, that’s our way of dealing with things like this. When I had cancer and thought I might lose a leg, we took it as a license to tell Heather McCartney jokes! (But never within earshot of anyone that might be offended!) Whatever gets you through!

They did the same procedure for another guy on the same day as well Rossy and he is also paralysed! There’s a few questions to be answered!
October 10, 2011 at 4:03 pm #117275FabienneMemberSorry to read about your brother and his wife.
For flights did you ever try skyscanner.com ?
Can’t remember which airport my friend from southhampton is flying into when visiting her family.
Car rental can be expensive in UK.Hope you’ll be able to visit them, it’s so difficult to be far from a sick family member.

October 10, 2011 at 5:56 pm #117281Taylor5MemberGod thats shocking!!! I often wonder why the same people takethe knocks over and over again… we had the same thing but at a lesser extent, my SIL has MS and she had to look after my brother when he had the cancer..
NO back operation is routine, my mother was told in her 30’s she would be in a wheelchair in less then 10 years if she didnt get an op on her back, she chose not to get the op and at 73 is a very active woman and always on the go….. i needed an op a few years ago but like my mother refused, they came come on such a long way, with care and rehab and lots of willpower he will, please God be back up and about in no time. I will say a prayer for him and your family, it cant be easy
October 11, 2011 at 7:56 am #117311happymumblemumParticipantAh thats awful Hawkeye 🙁
Regarding transport, personally i find car hire cheap in the uk and that may be your best bet to find closest airport then hire a car…or you could take your own car and drive down from Holyhead? Bit of a hike though..
I do the sail and rail …with irish ferries its a fab deal foot passenger ferry then all train tickets included be around 60 euro return for you xx Again big hike but less stressfull than flying …
October 11, 2011 at 8:43 am #117252munchinParticipantgosh hawkeye sorry to hear that – hope the rehabilitation works for your brother. Terrible that such a thing can happen.
on a side note – HMM can you tell me where you get prices etc for sail & rail – we usually take the boat to liverpool but take the car be interesting to what the price & time would be for sail & rail – Thank you
