I was so annoyed the other day when I got a taxi from town. It was 6 euro and all I had was a 20 euro note. I was going to tip the man a euro, but instead of saying, ‘take a euro for yourself’ I waited for the change to hand it over to him. It’s like a reflex for me to tip taxi drivers. However! the guy gave me back only 13 euro!! He had decided that I was going to give him a tip all by himself  I was at a loss for words, but stood my ground and demanded my money back. He tried to laugh it off, but I was furious. It’s just a Euro, but that is not the point! Anyway…feel better now I’ve got it off my chest :)

That is sooo annoying, tips should be at peoples discretion (sp!) Just noticed this at the weekend, we were in a restauraunt and when the bill came, we paid the waiter …surprise surprise he never returned with the change (it was nearly a tenner) and while we were perfectly happy to leave a tip, we wernt really given the option, a bit rich I thought !!

i got a taxi a few months ago too it was meant to be 8 euro’s but the taxi driver said it was ten and wouldn’t give me my change back
so i complained to his boss and now the driver always charges 6 euros for town runs even if its a bus run which is meant to be 8….the cheek of some people

it works both ways though, my uncle drives a taxi in the town and 2 weeks ago he picked up a manand took him to duleek where the man got out and tried to run off my uncle tackled him and got beat up they didn’t catch the man yet he’s afraid to drive his taxi again but he has to, to pay the bills

totally went off topic i think 🙄 😆

Amazing how opportunistic people can be, it doesn’t make for a very cohesive and respectful society 🙁

Anyone give you any crap (of any kind – not just taxies), try to get their name, licence plate and/or their taxi driver number.
I will be only too willing to let everyone know about them or their taxi company on an Irish help/protest site I set up.
Your own details will not be mentioned but by heavens, I’ll name and shame the robbing buggers!
There is a few going around at the mo pulling this stunt.

Would you not be leaving your self open to legal action if you name a shame people on your site….. you would only be going on someone else word or oppion IYKWIM. I do think its a great idea but not directly naming the company/person

While not naming the actual person, a person still is entitled to say that he/she felt that a taxi number "31" for example, might have been a bit harsh in charging and go on to explain in detail why.

It can be left to the reader as to how they should read the opinion. I am always aware of the laws of liable and stick to the known journalist ABC rule (always be covered).

My worry about something like this would be nasty people taking advantage, for example you have 2 taxi firms in competition, what is stopping one making up a story and giving taxi "no 30" over charged was rude etc……
Just think there would be people who wouldnt use if as a good service or outlet of comments, but to get at others in their business or just someone they dont like

True, you do have a point.
We should not be afraid to say that we have been ripped off however and say roughtly whom it was and how they treated the victim.
To quote a known saying: "Evil persists while good men say nothing"

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

I am determined to think about writing a strong, but still polite letter, that I may, or may not post stright way, or in the not to distant future, to a person that needs to be aware of this.

ohhh I feel better now dammit. (Sorry for blaspheming)

I usally just give a euro for taxis…but everyone wants a tip these days. I guess 10%-15% is ok, but I want the service to be good, not just a reflex tip.

biggins i don’t think it’s a great idea to name and shame everything is liabilis…..you’ll be treading on very thin ice, maybe the best thing would be to report to the taxi regulator or if not taxi ripping you off say a shop etc the consumer agency there is a reason that these company’s or regulators exist, you can be done for defemation of character or sabotage of someones business, and it’s not just the journalist ABC rule as you say, they too have code of ethics that they have to adhere to as well as the laws of the land, all articles printed are proofed and edited as to give fair and just opinion etc towards businesses etc, in order not to be sued, but for someone just to say here feck it i’m going to set up a site you really have to be very careful, people i know always complain and in ireland we don’t stop complaining, however when it comes to naming and shaming and really giving a go at someone’s business on line or whatever it’s always available and if someone wanted to sue you for loss of earning or damage to business this is what they’ll use as proof that they have been damged in some way…….

i realise you want to make people aware of being ripped off here and there, to be honest i’m sure people know but in rip off ireland we put up with it even when we shouldn’t we complain but don’t persue…….just be very careful of how you approach and to be honest i would seek legal advice regards this before setting up name and shame…….
