Information for Women with Prelabour Rupture of Membranes (PROM) at Term
This information is for pregnant women whose waters have broken (the membranes around the baby have ruptured) but labour has not yet begun.
You have told us that you would prefer to wait as long as possible for an opportunity for labour to begin naturally. You can wait safely for up to 48 hours for labour to begin, provided there are no signs of infection.
If your labour does not begin we have booked you in for induction of labour on

In the meantime you will need to do the following:
• Observe the colour of your vaginal loss at each pad change
• Monitor your baby’s movements
• Check your temperature every 4 hours
You should contact the hospital if:
• You feel unwell or experience flu like symptoms
• Your temperature goes above 37.3ºC
• You have a bright red vaginal bleeding
• There is a change in the colour of the waters draining
• There is an odour from your vaginal loss
• You start to contract and contractions become strong
• Your baby does not move as much as it has been
• Your abdomen is tender
Other advise:
• You may take a bath in plain water with ruptured membranes
• Eat and drink as desired to ensure hydration and energy
• Rest as much as possible
