HI ladies,
Seeing as it is the season of goodwill, i was wondering what we can all do to help charities / others in our community??
I know everyone is busy & broke but if we all did something small to help others wouldnt it make life a little easier for everyone.
Im sure we can all come up with loads of suggestions?
I will start the list
> Visit a neighbour who may need some company this Christmas/ winter
> Purchase charity Christmas cards
> Drogheda Homeless aid (as per an other thread, they are looking for mens clothes).
> Volunteer your services to a charity. So, if you know of any charities that need help making collections or anything at all – please let us all know?
Any other suggestions?
November 27, 2010 at 3:10 pm #105320Taylor5MemberFunny that you say it…. i have 3 black bags in my boot, will bring down on Monday, dh lost loads of weight so loads of last years jumpers, jackets and fleeces… just what they will need in this weather.
I have two old neighbours, on lady has my phone number and she can ring me at any time, it might just be a pint of milk or a lit to mass, but she said she is sooo relaxed to know that she has someone to ring if needed…… its so little but means alot to older people
November 27, 2010 at 3:35 pm #105328Maria30MemberWith the weather being so cold, check on elderly neighbours and those who cant get out and about easily.
Remind them to check if they have enough heating oil, food etc
Clear driveways and footpaths from ice and snow
You can buy 25kg of rock salt in Homebase and Town & Country in Duleek for about €10
November 27, 2010 at 3:42 pm #105330Taylor5Memberwoodies have the salt too…. a shallow bowl of lukewarm water for the robins to wash in, they need water to keep their wings fluffy and warm..
November 27, 2010 at 3:44 pm #105333Maria30MemberForgot about the poor little birds, must remember to get some food for them
November 27, 2010 at 7:52 pm #105348Taylor5Memberdont forget the water too… even for a little drink, but if you have a robin in your garden they need it as they have to wash their feathers everyday, if the feathers are oily htey can freeze to death
i dont like bird feeders as we had rats eating from a feeder in our tree, what would you recommend to feed them with, last year i put porridge and half an apple, they loved it
November 27, 2010 at 11:54 pm #105364MaryEMemberSo we’ve added the following to our list:
> visiting the elderly
> feeding the birdsAny other suggestions?
Anyone already collecting/ volunteering for a charity?
Hjs, were you selling calenders or something for charity?
This year in particular, there may be neighbours who may not be elderly but may have had a tough year for one reason or another, who may appreciate a call & a chat. Like ive a neighbour who was let go from her job, she told me that she is bored & lonely at home everyday and doesnt know what to do with herself, misses company. Ive tried to really make efforts with my neighbours recently, not just to say hello in passing but to call in every now & then, with a cake or something, for a cuppa. We dont impose on each other, we are not all best buddys now (cause i like my space) but i know they are there if i need them & visa versa. I enjoy our cuppas. I have to say they were all very good to me when my house was broken into earlier this year.
November 28, 2010 at 1:06 am #105367Taylor5Memberi like my spacetoo… i did say to a new mum one day, if she every needed someone just to call, she called one day, she was very upset as she thought the baby was very sick…. she had a coffee and i had a look at the baby, turned out to be a tooth that caused the trouble, she felt like a fool but was delighted to get to the bottom of her "sick baby!"
November 28, 2010 at 10:03 am #105368sunshineorlaMemberThere is a website called volunteer.ie They list all the charirites in the area that are looking for help and you can apply online to be put in touch with the ones that interest you. Its really good.
I visit a 90 year old lady every week and just sit and chat for a few hours while she fills me full of tea and biccies. Its company for her and it breaks up her week a bit. I get to hear some lovely stories of the old days.
Volunteering is an enjoyable thing to do whatever your interests and may even help you get skills that lead you into the workplace. There is no excuse for people sitting at home bored when they could be helping someone and meeting new friends at the same time.
Check it out!!!!November 30, 2010 at 5:30 pm #105534MoonflowerMemberDrogheda Animal rescue Christmas cards 6 for 3euro and calendars 10 euro each…both have lovely photos of animals rescued by them over last year…can buy from http://www.dar.ie or pm me or at Sonairte…
November 30, 2010 at 5:40 pm #105537JedtKeymasterThere are charity drop off points in Laurence Town Centre, some of the Tescos and some other points around Drogheda, so you can just drive up and drop off the toys/clothes etc you want to donate.
Laurence town centre are collecting gifts for the women’s refuge, anyone who wants to donate something can drop it to the reception at LTC.
Marshes in Dundalk are doing a ‘Toys on the table’ appeal where canned goods, toys, small gifts etc can be placed in Santa’s sleigh in the Marshes centre and they will be donated to needy families locally.
SVP is always looking for donations too, they are on Trinity St and Peter St and donations can be dropped in.
If you do not have anything to donate or do not have spare money to buy a gift you can give the gift of your time. ISPCC are looking for volunteers for the Drogheda area too, so you could do that.
And the easiest thing of all is to give a smile – see what happens if you smile at someone in the street, even a stranger, most times they smile back (ok, sometimes they scowl) but mostly you get a smile back so thats one way to spread some Christmas cheer!! 😀 😀
November 30, 2010 at 6:04 pm #105542Taylor5MemberMoonflower i seen the calanders in Corcorans, the photos are brilliant best one in years xxxx
Great price on the cardsi gave a woman a euro for her trolly outside tesco, it was lashing down and she was a bit on the old side… i just said are your okay, she said she couldnt find her token… i gave the euro, she came up to me at the till and said "oh i havent got any change yet" i told her to say a prayer for me…. i hope she did, as i need a prayer more then a euro 😉
November 30, 2010 at 7:21 pm #105545JedtKeymasterTaylor, that is so sweet, I love when people are generous like that. I was in the marshes a few weeks ago getting a trolley at Dunnes and could not find a token or euro and it was freezing and fierce windy and a woman gave me her trolley instead of retrieving her token. I had not a stitch of change on me but she insisted, she said she has loads at home, I was delighted and grateful.
I try to do nice things like that….reckon what goes around comes around so I got something nice back that day in Dundalk for sure.
Mary – maybe you could invite your neighbour up to the Mumstown event next Tuesday in the Bagel bar if you like, thats a nice way to meet lots of people and have a cuppa and passes a morning and i actually know 2 people who got jobs from people they met at that event!
November 30, 2010 at 9:05 pm #105553missysmumMemberGreat to see so many of us are thinking about others at this time of year.
Unfortunately i dont have a lot to give in terms of money this year but i’ll definitely be giving a couple of presents to the womens refuge at the laurence town centre next week. I can only imagine some of the circumstances that these women and their families find themselves in and even if its only just a small gift, it may just bring them a little christmas cheer.November 30, 2010 at 10:19 pm #105561Taylor5MemberGreat to see so many of us are thinking about others at this time of year.

I think to be nice to people, little things, a woman let me skip ahead in the q in Aldi, just a smile and a hello can make all the difference to someone mood and their day…… I let a really really rude man go ahead of me in the shop last week, he checked his stuff and then turned and said "sorry im just running so late and so stressed, thank you for letting me go ahead" I could see the stress in him and i could almost see his mood lift….. its the small things -
