The Parent Advice Podcast for parents & caregivers in need of expert support.

So what happened when a former radio presenter, toddler behaviour and activities expert, met a psychotherapist specialising in parenting? A podcast that’s an anti-dote to the murky parenting advice in the online and social media world; The Mum Mind Podcast (or how to stop your mother falling out of your mouth) hosted by Stef McSherry (Kinderama.com)and Bethan O’Riordan (Psychotherapist).

Bethan and Stef said: “We want parents to know they’re not alone, they’re not doing it wrong and there’s no perfect parent”

From their combined forty years’ experience supporting children and families, Stef and Bethan answer parents’ questions balancing humour, fun, sensitive subjects and the reality of parenthood. They know that parents are under time and logistical pressure and want to ease the mental burden/juggle with strategies, advice and tips for calmer family life with less worrying and guilt.

The podcast was inspired by the long waitlists for children’s mental health and development services and the lack of places for parents to go with their day to day parenting dilemmas.

From their work, they could see parents struggling and looking for simple ‘real’ advice on how to help their children. Access to support, information and practical strategies for change is at the core of what this pioneering podcast does; ask the experts and get the answers, so fuss, no fluff and no delay.

The Mum Mind Podcast is available on all networks including Apple Podcasts , Spotify and Acast each Tuesday.

A range of topics are covered including answering parents questions received through Instagram or email. Here’s the top four:

Tackling Racism Stef and Bethan are particularly proud of this, their most recent podcast series; this series has created an enormous response with listeners. As white women, they knew they had to get an expert to help educate both hosts and listeners. The 3 part series is:

    – A Mum (and listener) who got in touch on Instagram to share her experience of raising mixed race children and the impact of racism on her family

    – Author, activist and mother of 3, Emer O’Neill educates and informs about skin colour, reclaiming the N word and other essential talking points for parents, families, schools and communities

    – How parents can raise children so they don’t need to put others down to feel good

    Fortnite

Not all screen time is equal and the most important part of this is for parents to make sure that the real world is as stimulating, fun and offers as many great connections with friends and family as the online world does.

    Negative thinking in children

The most natural thing in the world is for a parent to tell children kind and reassuring things about themselves, especially when a child has critical or negative thoughts about themselves. But what children need is a parent who can help those hard feelings and thoughts be made safe, and not overridden with nice words.

    School refusal

In a world with so much that’s instant, many children are feeling stuffed and overwhelmed and many are shutting down. School refusal is a part of this, and children struggling with this need the most gentle care and minding to rebuild their lives. Remember, behind every behaviour is a feeling and behind the feeling is a need. So while school refusal for parents can be a time of tremendous stress, worry and frustration, remedying this is about children needing so much care and slowing life right down.

“Our focus is helping families live calmer lives with expert information, tips, strategies and advice. This podcast is for all parents of children of all ages and abilities.”
