huge GAA blunder , no players are to blame.. ref gave final decision.
July 11, 2010 at 4:30 pm #96613AlmaeMemberRight i am a meath supporter and will always be one , I do not blame the players on this in anyway or form..
i am sick to the stomach over the end of the game ,the goal should not have been allowed ,a free in should have been given and let them at it another day…The ref got it wrong and was man handled by a few louts..that was a huge disgrace..at the end of the day its a game of football. alot of pride i know , but violence is not the answer.i dont care how long it is since they were in a final etc … jaysus..come on..violence can not be allowed…i cant see a replay be given, once the cup was presented…
July 11, 2010 at 4:48 pm #96615AnneMemberMe too, im a huge Meath Fan!! The goal should not have been allowed, but the umpires are to blame, not the players. If the shoe was on the other foot!!!! Maybe the presentation should have been cancelled once the Ref was assaulted, and then the Officials could have made a decision………..
July 11, 2010 at 5:46 pm #96617noeleenwMemberexactly if it was the other way round i cant see louth being allowed to lift the cup …. meath shouldnt have lifted it

July 12, 2010 at 11:39 am #96629MartinaParticipantOk I have to represent the Louth side, lol…. I’m not a huge Football Fan I did watch the match, allmy neighbours were there and they have lived for a day like this. To be honest yesterday evening it was like somebody died!
I have to admit for a non football fan I was gutted, just gutted. Nobody condones the eejits who assaulted the referee but the decision was wrong. Everyone seems to think a replay should be offered. I worry about that. I’m not sure that a Louth team so drained of emotion after whats just happen could play as well again so soon afterwards and that emotions will run very high resulting in a dirty game from both sides.
The whole country is up in arms about this not just Louth…. it has taken over the sports coverage of the weekend and it takes someting to deflect attention from a World Cup Final.
Somebody said what if the shoe were on the other foot? I think the coverage would be exactly the same, Meath fans aren’t even comfortable about it and I don’t think Louth Fans would be either if it were that way around.
I don’t think Meath can celebrate this win effectively and I don’t think Louth will ever get over this particular defeat. So maybe a replay is the only way to resolve it.
Try and remember something though, between 25 and 29,000 Louth people were in Croke Park yesterday, they shouldn’t all be tarred with the one brush because of the actions of 5-6 people. In saying that 1 thug is a thug too many.
Sean Kelly the ex president of the GAA was interviewed by Ray D’Arcy this morning, he said it was unfathomable that such a mistake was made, he’s in favour of a replay but says it has to come from Meath to offer it and he also said when asked to compare what happened to the Ireland v. France Match and Tierry Henri that Mr. Henri only did a hand ball. He didn’t score an illegal goal!
A big issue in all of this has been overlooked though, a lot of yellow cards were issued by the referee to players trying to argue that the goal was a mistake, its clear now they were arguing in the right, those cards should be scrapped and they should not receive any suspensions based on them.
July 12, 2010 at 11:51 am #96630ed1ParticipantI am not a GAA fan at all but I am from Louth and am really gutted as to what happened yesterday. What I dont understand is how that Meath player can live with himself today. He has to have known himself what he did was illegal. I know the final decision is the refs but come on, if that meath player had owned up to what he did straight away maybe things could have been different. Plus it was over extra time when it happened.
It was such a close game the whole way through and even though a lot of Louth supporters didnt think they would have a chance against Meath to be pipped at the post like that was devastating .
I really hope that somethings comes of this even though I doubt it will.
July 12, 2010 at 12:10 pm #96632AlmaeMembereven if there is a replay will it be safe to go .. honestly all the harsh words and actions since yesterday is going to leave bitter pill..
Sean Boylan and a Meath Sub were hit yesterday by 1 of the fools…
July 12, 2010 at 12:50 pm #96633noeleenwMembernot standing up for louth but the meath fans werent totally innocent either my dad said he couldnt get my son out quick enough 😳
July 12, 2010 at 12:54 pm #96634AlmaeMemberit was a scary place yesterday… dont even know if i will go to teh replay.. wasnt at it yesterday thank god , i would have lost my life .. i might just watch it at home …it’ll prob pee rain…;)
July 12, 2010 at 3:08 pm #96641meathmamofourMemberNo, it shouldn’t be replayed – the title should be for Louth! Louth were a point up before that goal was given with only seconds left of injury time. If the goal was illegal and doesn’t stand – the cup should go to Louth as rightful winners.
Very disappointing that Meath are on record saying that it was a legal goal. In his heart, Joe knows it was not.
We are Meath supporters, btw.
