MemberSAMHAIN is a Celtic word which translates to ‘Summers End’. It marks the beginning of the Celtic New Year.
In the Christian calendar it is known as ‘All Saints Day’ or ‘All Hallows Eve’ and in modern times this has been shortened in to ‘Halloween’. However, it is sometimes known as ‘The festival of Apples’ or ‘The Festival of the Dead’ and is a powerful time for divination and contacting the spirit realm.
This festival is a time for honouring those that have passed on, a time of remembrance and is the only night when it was believed the spirits of the departed have the ability to visit relatives and loved ones, so a popular Samhain tradition is to hold a ‘Dumb supper’ where a place is set at the evening meal table for a departed loved one. During the meal, anecdotes are told and quiet memories are conjured up of the honoured guest and since this is a time of communication, perhaps things that have been left unspoken can be aired.
Samhain is a time for closure, a time when our ancestors celebrated the third and final harvest of the year.
As the closure of one year gives way to the birth of a fresh one, Samhain is a wonderful time for assessing all that has gone before, and starting to formulate plans for all that is yet to be.
Traditional colours for the festival are black and orange. Black being the colour of protection, loss, death and re-birth. Orange being the colour for endurance, ambition and success.
Part of a Samhain ritual may also include writing your hopes and dreams for the coming year on a piece of paper, and burning in the flame of a black candle. The ashes may be gathered and kept in a black sachet or envelope to ensure their success in the coming year.
This is why Halloween is my favourite time of year, a wonderful way to remember passed over loved ones.
