The situation at the passport office in Dublin is terrible, lots of people are queuing up for passports and cannot get them because of the strike.
There was a family going on their first trip away but they needed a passport for one of the children. Because if this silly situation, they could not get it in time so they missed their flight. Can you imagine telling the kids they were going to see Mickey Mouse and then not being able to go.
A friend of mine works there. He gets paid a great salary and good overtime when he works in the evenings etc. I know they’ve been hit with the pension levy and no one wants to take a cut in wages but with so many unemployed right now – they need to be more grateful for their jobs. What they are doing is just hurting the public and I cannot say I am supporting them.
There are people getting very upset about it and I can understand why. Imagine if you had to go visit a sick relative abroad and needed a new passport but could not get it?
Why is it always the public who are penalised in these situations?? The minister for transport says anyone in the passport office who continues this protest will not be paid so hopefully that will resolve it….
March 22, 2010 at 8:09 pm #92043nickysinglemumMemberyep i m waiting on me and daughters passports 18 days now 👿
March 22, 2010 at 8:40 pm #92045MartinaParticipantIts only getting publicity now but the go slow has been ongoing a long time. I know someone who waited 12 weeks for theirs and they sent it in at the beginning of December. I can’t understand why these people are being paid when they are not doing their job. Just because they are sitting at their desks is irrelevant if they aren’t performing their tasks.
March 22, 2010 at 8:43 pm #92047yummymummyMemberIt’s ridiculous and so is the ministers claims that they wont be paid. They should not have been paid the minute this farce started!!!!! Imagine I did this in my job, Id be sacked no question. Its a joke.
March 22, 2010 at 10:13 pm #92063rcoleMemberFor any time they refuse to answer the phone or fail to deal with the public. They should be docked there salary.
If they stil have a problem, the work should be outsourced to an outside contractor and private sector workers who would like to work should get there jobs.
Pay them redundancy.
And then ask them are they hard done by.
I am waiting weeks for a new driving liscence.
Anyone in there position who is not working should not be paid – simple.
The governement needs to grow some balls !
March 23, 2010 at 8:26 am #92073munchinParticipantdon’t know if you heard joe duffy yesterday but the reps of the staff was trying to say that a machine is broken hence the back up in passports was nothing to do with go-slow/work to rule but the broken machines instead – well your one waiting for her passport let rip and bascially told him to get of his ar** and tell the staff to do their jobs 😆
if i behaved like that in my job i’d be sacked as would most ordinary joe soaps! People are struggling to hold onto their jobs but if they need a passport in a hurry they have to take days off to TRY and get it, one lady was there all day fri, all day yest and was told to come back tomorrow 😯March 23, 2010 at 9:33 am #92083YvonneMemberWas watching a bit of the Frontline last night about it…. one poor woman was waiting on passports for herself and her two kids since February…. they were going to Disneyland on Friday with her sisters and their children… and now they are the only three that cannot go…. its disgraceful.
I know someone who booked a holiday for the 1st April and has just applied for their daughters passport – not a hope of getting it I don’t think!
Munchin they said that last night, there is one machine broken in Balbriggan and the one on Molesworth Street is down aswell, meaning there is only 1 machine for the whole country!
March 23, 2010 at 10:01 am #92091munchinParticipantYvonne i know 2 people in that position – one applied last weekl but needs a passport for 1st april and another needs it in 10days!!!!
my mam was looking to book a trip and now she won’t book unless she has her new passport and i can’t blame herMarch 23, 2010 at 10:40 am #92094happymumblemumParticipantGod this is awful, I am suprised no one has been punched in the office..
I remember getting ready to go to England one week and realised my dd passport was out of date, I got the passport the next day..thank god we were going to UK as the next time we would have looked at the passport was when we went to Disneyland Paris a month later and it may not have worked out so well.
I really feel desperately sad for these families especially with children.
March 23, 2010 at 1:52 pm #92112JedtKeymasterAh but you have to feel sorry for them….
They get well paid, plus over time if they work a minute past 5pm, they go on courses that are paid for, had their wages increased in line with the private sector when times were good, get fully paid sick leave and a half day off to go Christmas shopping. Must be tough to have a job like that???
And now, to add to all the stress, they have to try to work with a broken machine (which we only found out about even though the backlog is weeks, if not months, old?)
I know what would help the poor loves cope with this terrible situation thats making them strike – the prospect of actually losing their jobs! Their wages should be withheld or cut – as they are not doing what they are being paid to do!
If I was going on holiday with my family and could not get a passport for oneof us and we missed our holiday, I would be livid.
Its amazing this has not resorted to violence yet. I know some the people in the passport office and they are so laid back about this, they honestly could not care less that their actions are affecting the regular person – they don’t care because they get away with it.
I dread to say this but our government needs to resolves this.
Might go on for a while so…..
March 23, 2010 at 2:01 pm #92116rossylisaMemberwe have been saving to go to italy in september. i better put in for ds one now, its a disgrace people pay money for the express ones and arnt getting them, they should be all sacked, plenty of people without work that would happly do there jobs.
March 23, 2010 at 2:06 pm #92117munchinParticipantjust heard a man has lost over 4.5k on his holiday that he should have been on this am – bloody disgrace
my mam applied for hers today – decided she better get it in so she can book a holiday at some time this year with a bit of luck and the lady in post office told a min of 20 working days even though it’s going in th express post envelope 👿 😡March 23, 2010 at 2:07 pm #92118Maria30MemberI sent away for passports yesterday for myself and the 2 boys. We are going on holidays in 7 weeks. I thought we would be alright but watched a bit of Frontline last night and there were people who applied in Feb and hadnt recieved their passports yet so I m worried now.
I ll be camping outside Passport office the week before the holiday and wont be leaving until I get the passports. I really need this holiday.
The girl in post office told me it would take about 20 working days and with Good Friday and Easter Monday I worked it out that we should have them on 21st April (hopefully).
March 23, 2010 at 2:08 pm #92119munchinParticipantsnap maria – we posted at same time 😆
March 23, 2010 at 2:40 pm #92123Taylor5MemberI do feel sorry for the people waiting fo passports but i do feel sorry for the staff working in these departments…. for years many many staff did extra work FOR NOTHING…. then the levy and pay cuts. No hold on why should they do work that they dont get paid for? If anyone of you were in their position levy, paycuts etc…. you would work to rule too! Anyone that says they wouldnt is a lier
i did hear about teh woman booking passports in Feb and not getting them, but feb was only 3 weeks ago….. its not like its months and months ago. I remember the day when you had to go to the passport office and q for hours, then if you were lucky you would have it in about 3 months….. they have a great system and i know a few of the staff who work there and the express passport turned around in 10 working days…… amazing staff and its down to the same very said staff that have the system working so well.
Oh by the way is junior staff who are being focused on and who are working to rule……. WORKERS HAVE TO STAND AND FIGHT
Dornt see why they havent been removed off the payroll….. i was takenoff the payroll many times for working to rule……. We need the unions to get a back bone and start supporting workers rights again. -
