Hi
Does anyone have any ideas of how to pack a car seat for travel on an airplane ??
Hiring a car on hols and the cost of hiring a seat was 50e whereas the airline charged 20e to take car seat … so chose the latter.
But now I’m puzzled as to how to pack a car seat ? I thought of big black bin bags … but they’re not strong enough and would most likely split in transit. Plus we’ll be using the seat to get to the airport , so will have to pack it when we park the car.
Any idea’s any one ?? I’m sure someone has done it before ?

July 1, 2010 at 12:52 pm #96284munchinParticipantyou can do that yummy, i would imagine if your paying for it that’s what you’d do alright. I assume though that you mean protecting it keeping it clean mmm not sure
Are we talking about a carry car seat – as in up to 9months?
We took ours last yr but we had paid for 3 bags and didn’t really need it then would have been charged for car seat SO one of the bags we used a rolly bag and had swim gear etc in the bag – when we got to airport we put car seat in the bag and got it out when we got there – no problems.July 1, 2010 at 2:45 pm #96295JedtKeymasterThere is a separate section at the airport for car seats. After you’ve booked in your luggage, they give you a separate sticker and you have to carry over your car seat and put it in there.
We’ve done this a few times and its fine, it will come out with your luggage at your destination.
Happy travels!

Only buggies are allowed in the hold, so car seats are checked in like luggage but in the oversize drop in. But just stumped how to wrap the car seat …Did you wrap your car seat in plastic bin bags ?? Oh , It’s a 2yr olds car seat.
July 1, 2010 at 7:17 pm #96316scole1Membersuppose themost important thing it to make sure the foam part head part doesn’t get damaged….could you even see if you could get a box and pack towels around the head part, get a box say from smyths or mother care???
if it’s a toddler seat like the graco ones you can take apart and lie flat in your bags? just wrap the head rest, you know the ones that are about 40e.. they come apart in three parts

July 2, 2010 at 11:09 am #96338scole1Memberno problem, that’s the best thing to do saves spending a rake of money on a car seat that may not be ok….
we went to portugal and hired car seats, no joke the head rest were snapped and glued, i went mental, and told them that that was the most important part, i like a looney went around 100 seats checked them all and got only 1 that was ok, then checked the baby seats the carry tot and found a few that were fine, but i was disgusted they just chuck them about and they charge 100euro for a seat that’s no use if you have an accident
July 2, 2010 at 8:54 pm #96356dittoMemberMMM …. why do they charge so much to hire car seats ??
Car rental is only about 150e for a week for the economy model, so based on the value of a car versus a car seat ???
I just assumed the hired car seats were laundered and saftey checked after each rental hence the expensive charge.
So glad I’m bringing my own then !
