MemberHi everyone,
At last night’s Lourdes Maternity Consumer Group AGM there was a discussion about booking visits at the hospital so I’ve been asked to pass along a message from the booking clinic at OLOL.
As I’m sure you’re aware birth ratesin all of the hospitals are up and mums are having to wait months to their first booking visit in some cases. If you are newly pregnant and have not already called the hospital please do so as soon as possible. If you are attending a GP please remind your GP to arrange your booking in visit…some GPs are leaving it very late to book their mums in and it’s resulting in delays for the mums.
Thanks everyone
Tracy

MemberI rang the hospital at 5 weeks and the girl in the booking office was in shock! She said some mums are leaving it until 12 or 14 weeks to ring for first appointment 😯 😯 😯 then they wonder why they cant get seen until 20 odd weeks 🙄 🙄 🙄

MemberYes it’s quite a problem at the moment – the hospital is even running saturday booking clinics to deal with the numbers…It’s so important that mums are getting adequate antenatal care starting early in their pregnancies. Mums – get on the phone today !!! 😀

MemberI don’t think I could leave it that late to ring!!! Good idea Taylor – they should send to GP’s and have a notice up in the surgeries and even in chemists aswell.

MemberHi
I rang at 4/5 weeks as soon as i found out really and i was still 12 weeks waiting for my first visit??? I thought thats just the way our hospitals are these days i wasnt expecting any miracles to be honest like actually been seen before i hit the second trimester luckily for me everything is ok. I would hate to think of the devestion it would cause a couple if there first visit was at 17 weeks and their baby had severe abnormalities etc etc.

MemberHappy your so right, what if I didnt have my bleed at 7 weeks I wouldnt have know I had an empty sack (the placenta keeps growing and symptoms as normal) until my 14th week. Now that would have been a huge shock.

MemberThey are constantly reminding the GPs about this and asking for their assistance.. Mums really need to get going on this themselves and don’t wait for your GP…just in case.

MemberYes but when you try to say anything to your gp or even the hospital about your concerns early on you are dismissed basically because if "you loose it then you loose it" thats the impression we are given if we are worried and contact the hospital in the first few weeks, i can only speak for myself and my own experience but i had two bleeds on this pregnancy and they couldnt have cared less as there is naff all you can do so to be honest the visits before you hit your second trimester are practically non existant in this country because they are not interested until your pregnancy (baby) becomes viable at about 23 weeks. I was put on hold for 15minutes and then told they where on top of their heads and that a miscarraige is normal and part of life unfortunately. Never mind the fact that im not from a medical profession and i hadnt a clue what to do next and that i was absolutely terrified out of my wits i didnt even get to answer her back and she hung up! I hope im getting my point across and you understand where i am coming from. I got the best care from the lourdes at the end but at the start i was on my own.

MemberThe only bad/unreasonable care i got from the lourdes was when i went up during my 1st pregnancy because i was bleeding and they treated me like i was a piece of dirt that walked in off the street
they left me waiting in a hallway till they could fit me in for a scan that i was told might not happen because i can’t just walk in off the street and demand one!
They told me to stay there, i couldn’t wait any longer and ended up miscarrying in the day room loo, which i was dragged off and treated like i ruined their day just by being there, by a nurse that must of been having a bad day and took it out on me
Everyone i met after that was really nice and treated me reallly well
I bled on two of my other pregnancys and they admitted me over night to make sure everything was ok
I’d go up as soon as i was sure i was pregnant to boook in my 1st appointment and still had to wait at least 3/4 months but if they told me to ring up to the hospital if i had any worries, which they would answer politely and quickly….most of the timesorry for the big rant!

MemberI guess it just depends on who you get seen by and whether they’ve had a good or bad day
