anyone see this program about 20yr old Simon Hales on his journey after suffering brain injuries after falling from a 20ft wall when out one night with friends. It’s amazing how a few minutes, an accident, can change your whole life. It was very poinent when he went back to the house he shared with college mates and realised how much his life has changed and he’s not at college now, he should have been in his 2nd year.
It showed the reality of how brain injury affects not just the person but the whole family who have to get to know this ‘new’ person after a brain injury. Suppose I’m fascinated by it as my own daughter used to ‘come back’ as I used to say, ‘different’ after a stroke. Little things would be different. She had a different laugh once and it took me a long time to get used to a new laugh. Things she liked before a stroke might be different after a stroke like favourite foods, tv programmes etc. She was the same but different. It was a very strange experience to go through. I really felt for this mum as she struggled at times to cope with how different her son is now and having to let go of the old Simon and embrace the new Simon.September 14, 2010 at 9:38 am #99967happymumblemumParticipantYes I saw it , it was very interesting..I watched because something similar happened to a very close freind of mines boyfriend..they were together 10 years and one day he fell off his bike ( norrmal bike ) he hadn’t been going fast but cracked his head ( no helmet) off the kerb ..
Any way he was in Beaumont for ages..in and out of coma’s ..close to Death, catching MRSA and lord knows what else..cut a long story short he did make a recovery but he was never quite the same person and suffered badly with mood swings etc etc..sadly the couple split and he moved back to U.K ..my friend would still be in touch with him but it was very sad to see lives turned upside down from an accident happening in a split second.

He was a 59 year old man and after a long time in hospital (Beaumount and the Lourdes) he had to learn to walk and talk again. He never got to go back to Bettystown as my Nana would not have been able to care for him so he went into a home. He was never the same man. He didnt know anyone. Sadly he died 2 years ago and noone was ever caught for the attack.
I watched part of that program too and was very moved by it. The poor chap, his whole life ahead of him and in a few minutes a whole different life ahead of him and his family.

The family were told he would never come around and would be a cabage if he did survive, against all odds he is now living in a care home and stays weekends with his mother… he is a fraction of the young fun loving guy he once was, but he is alive and kicking and in a few weeks is hoping to move into his own flat for someone with special needs
just shows you, we are only here for a moment and should make the most of it….
Did anyone see the programme about the chap from Cork who broke his neck playing Rugby in London… very very moving!! I roared crying watching it!! -
