Hi all, looking for some advice here. I am currently living in Kildare and waiting to move up to Drogheda when my house purchase goes through. I just found out that I am pregnant with number 2. Now ideally I would have the baby in Holles St as that is where dd was born and that is what I am familiar with. However we do not have a car and the thought of treking up and down on the train when big does not appeal!! Unfortunately I have only heard bad reports about the Lourdes, can anyone recommend this hospital? And anyone know of a nice Doctor in the centre of town? ANY thoughts and experiences would be extremly useful. Thanks.
    Polly.

I wouldnt believe everything you hear or read about the hospital.
I have lived in Drogheda all my life and have never ever had a bad experience in the hospital ever (was in for car accident, having my ds, ds was in for chest infections etc) and have nothing but praise for the staff!!!

As for a doctor, i think you might find it hard to get a good doctor, most of them say they are fully booked, cant take new patients etc, so you better start off ringing around and asking!!

Good luck with your 2nd pregnancy 🙂

i’ m only living in the area 4 years but i had my little girl there a year & half ago and i have to say couldn’t fault it – ok it wasn’t perfect but what hospital is!

agree with yummy if you’re looking to go private you’d want to be ringing around now, i was ringing at 7weeks and didn’t get the consultant i wanted. I did go with Dr Rabbee in the end and altough she’s brisk & too the point she’s lovely. if you’re going private for more scans Dr Rabbee didn’t have a mini-scanner in her rooms when i was attending her.

    Good luck with it all

    hi,
as yummymummy wrote: don’t believe everything you read ior hear, it’s not that bad 🙂 on the contrary, i was in holles street once, when i got first appointment with my first pregnancy, and said never again. prefered drogheda one :)) (but that is my personal view)
had my two children in lourds, spent night with my ds in hospital (vomiting bug), had an appointment with pediatrician for my dd alergies and staff are great, as for the doctors, like everywherelse, you can meet all sort .
    good luck

Oh thanks ever so much everyone!! I kind of knew as much but when you are given a choice it is almost more confusing! If I was in a car accident I wouldn’t be going ‘No, not that hospital please!! Sabbi- I would love a home birth, Dp is a bit petrified of the whole notion though so I don’t know if he could take it! How did you find your midwife? Was is very expensive?

ok, don’t want to sound like a tree hugger cos i’m so not one but my home birth was the most fantastic experience. it was realaxing, fun (yes, I said fun, my husband was telling me jokes while my mam was making tea & toast). i had no pain relief – did not want or need it. my midwife had it but i didn’t need it at all.

it cost me 2400 euro and i got grant for 1270 from HSE. it was totally brilliant. had all my visits at home, no stress, no problems. had two scans in hosp at 16 weeks and 38 weeks to check baby was ok

baby was breech until 37.5 weeks, got on my hands and knees, cleaned floor and she turned.

read tracy donegans book better birth book – totally brilliant, answers many of the ques you would have. statistically home birth safer than hosp birth (this has been proven time and again) so if you’re fit, healthy and have the support, its a fabulous experience to have.

also, midwife puts hosp on alert when youre in labour so its always a reassurance to know you have back up if needed. my midiwfe had 28 home births last year and 7 were transferred to hosp. usually due to tiredness.

hope that helps – definitely get tracey’s book, its fab!

    good luck!

    Hi,

I am expecting my first baby early August. My doctor is Dr. Harkin. She is lovely. I can only recommend her.

Another thumbs up for the Lourdes here.

Just like any Irish hospital there are plenty of positive as well as negative stories – unfortunately the media tend to focus on the negative ones. Having worked as a doula in both I’d choose OLOL in a heartbeat. Homebirth is a wonderful option too – we’re hoping to get the homebirth scheme going again in the Lourdes in the next few years (fingers crossed !!)

Another option is the fantastic Midwife Led Unit (it’s a home from home environment with pools to labour in) It’s very popular so if that’s something you’re interested in I would ring the hospital as soon as possible to see if you are eligible.

Best of luck with your pregnancy and your big move !

    Tracy 😀

The media dont report positive stories about the OLOL
If I had a choice of which hospital to give birth in… between the 3 Dublin hospitals or OLOL, I would pick OLOL each time.
I had ds there nearly 3 years ago now and they are fantastic, I had a few problems at the end and I know I wouldnt have got the care I got in another hospital.
