ParticipantSo Gerry Ryan used Cocaine?
I feel very sorry for his kids having to deal with this so close to Christmas, I actually work with his daughter and she is always so dignified and lovely, I wonder how this will set them back.
I heard about his apparant cocaine use many years ago when working in the Dublin posh hotel circuit, butnever really believed it as he was always so against drugs etc etc..
Why are the media allowed to report on some ones medical details any way? Is this normal..?

MemberA good friend of mine works in RTE and has said it was well known that he did use cocaine …..and he was and is still not the only one that does that there. I feel sorry for his girlfriend who doesnt seem to have realised he was still using – his wife probably knew. Its sad when these details are released by the media but he was such a public figure im sure that was inevitable really ….

KeymasterI was shocked, I had heard the cocaine rumours but never believed them. I find it hard to believe someone like Gerry would do that.
But it just goes to show that despite appearances, he was a man in turmoil, struggling in many aspects of his life.
I feel dreadfully sorry for his family and partner. Its so sad for them, they will have to face the media backlash now.
Maybe it should have been kelp private to the family but its out now and everyone will have an opinion – it would be good if something positive could come out of it – it just goes to show, no matter how successful someone appears, they may be facing major worries in their life that they cannot cope with. Shows he was more human than many of us may have thought.
So sad, RIP Gerry.

MemberIt should be kept private, but being a public …
but in the other hand, it’s good to know, people will realise that drugs kill and eveyone in the society can be affected by drugs.I feel sorry for his family having to deal with the press.

MemberMy first initial reaction was that couldnt be true…but weather it is or not why spread it all over the papers…why put his family and partner and close friends through the gossip and the opinions and the gossip.
I think its sad…for someone i listened to when i could yes i am shocked. But thats only my opinion. And god love his family. Now they will be judged for what has come out. Very sad as Gerry was such a talented man with such a broad knowledge of so much.
The way i look at it is….we all came into the world the same way….and we will all go at some stage….and who has the right to judge him, his family etc….cause there are plenty out there that will and will back lash at them…and who gives them the right to judge. I personally dont like being under any sort of judgement and most certainetly dont judge anyone else. 🙁 🙁 🙁

MemberI was a bit shocked to hear it… I do think its terrible that his family had to hear all this just before Christmas aswell… it will be hard for his children to deal with…
It was always going to be spoken in the media regardless but the timing is just unfair to the family.

MemberI did hear the rumours many many years ago, from my brother who works in a big posh Dublin hotel, he also told us about a lead singer from a irish boyband having affairs too…. i didnt believe that rumour either 🙄 🙄 🙄
I feel very sorry for her family, his partner and his children… to lose a parent is such a heart breaking event in your life, if to die on natural or an accident is hard enought too deal with, but to die from an addiction is just terrible… It make me very angry and i did utter "your fu*ing idot" when i heard the news.
I was just thinking back to how Gerry covered the Cathy French story and how he warned the listeners about the dangers of cocaine… pot and kettle spring to mind…All cases in the coroner office are mostly public, its only high profile murder cases that would that would get media intrest, they would be normal folk, so when a celeb dies their case it treated the same, think its very unfair and hard on the families… if not related to the person or involved in the case then the finding should stay withinn the court,
I hope this would make coke users stop and think… two high profile Dublin celebs dying in a matter of years 😯 😯 😯December 13, 2010 at 1:37 pm #106175Martina
ParticipantI feel very sad that someone who so many people loved and respected has been found out to be nothing more than a Junkie who was rich enough to hide it.
God Bless his kids and I hope they grow to have a genuine hatred of drugs and not the hypocrital hatred of a broadcaster who gave out about them and the people who sell them when all the time he was lining their pockets.
I’m sorry for his children. I think the publicity is a bit much as far as quantity is concerned but I don’t think it does anyone any harm to realise its not just poor people’s kids who end up hooked or dying from drugs!

ParticipantAfter being a lifeline for so many people, what a waste!
According to an "off the record" quote from a medical attendee at inquest, no way the partner would not have known about use….allegedly!
Last conversation I had with him was to teach him how to upload his iPod full of music on to his new computer (apple don’t like you doing that!! hee hee). I repeat…what a waste.
First time users just see and hear "cool" positives…..there is nobody to tell them (and still appear "cool") of the multiple damage that every hit can cause, to the cardio system as well as the neuroligcal side. You could blindfold 20 people and get them to jaywalk across the motorway at 3am……many will survive, but you wouldn’t recommend it as a hobby!!

MemberI was shocked and upset to be honest. I loved Gerry Ryan and my office has not been the same without him.
I am very upset for his children having to put it with all of that media coverage at the weekend, Was that really necessary ?
Cant help remembering him covering the Katie French story and how he went on about using drugs………….bit sad now to be honest
Im gutted for his children and I know that they will be ok eventually, they appear to have a strong mum
December 14, 2010 at 5:20 pm #106270Taylor5
MemberSusan that was the first thing (his coverage of the katie french death) i thought about
I think his girlfriend did know about the abuse, but he has been telling her that he had given up… so maybe she got as much as a surprise as the rest of us!
I did hear a rumour that it was the reason his marriage broke up, the talk is that bothwere using and the wife gave up but he wouldnt… sad very very sad!!!

ParticipantTaylor i heard that rumor too quiet a few years ago – apparently the whole thing has been going on years.
At the end of the day it’s his cildren I feel for, it’s been hard enough on them losing a dad without having all this in the limelight too.December 14, 2010 at 11:46 pm #106312Taylor5
Memberi know of another BIG RTE celeb who loves the stuff, many years ago came across this person with the group i hung out with, it was all the rage in the clubs we went out in and was soooo surprised this person was doing this….. i was told that its a regular thing as they have a natural high from their jobs then bang your show is over and they are down and depressed!!!
It makes you wonder was he always out of his box doing his show, all hyper and on a mega high! Or the days he pushed the limits asking all the rude questions and flirting, was he high those days?December 16, 2010 at 5:24 pm #106397Fabienne

exactly!
The french president has lots of celebrities friends including one of them very famous in France for his cocaine abuse. But still you can see the president around him, what example does it give?
That’s why people will think it’s ok because such a famous person does it and they’re not in trouble with justice or health (until they do, and then people around will pretend I didn’t know).I remember when I was 20ish a family friend in his late 30’s, was saying he would like to try it just to see whatit’s like. Because there isn’t a strong signal about it’s dangerous for everyone celebreties and regular people (rich or poor) it’s more difficult to say no.
At the end, he did not try it, people around the table convienced him not to, and that could put his passion for sports at risk.
He’s taking other risks in life but not with drugs.Fabienne
