Department of Education and Science have directed that all Irish-Medium schools teach 2.5 hrs of English every week from no later than the start of the second term of Junior Infants class. This implementation has huge implications for gaelscoils which follow an early- immersion model of education. The early-immersion model is backed by research and has been shown to have greater benefit for children learning a second language (like in a gaelscoil) than the proposed decision by the Department of Education.
