For those of you that don’t know, the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge is an annual event which is staged world wide to raise public awareness of the need for proper information and support for breastfeeding mothers and it’s normalization in society. It originated in the Canadian province of British Columbia back in 2001 with 856 babies and their mothers sitting down to nurse simultaneously at 26 different sites. The Challenge has since grown to become an annual global event. 2009 saw 4,766 babies taking part at 246 sites in 21 Countries.

2010 was the first time it was held in Ireland. Maria Moulton, a Cork mum, heard of the challenge, and being a tandem nursing mother of two little girls with a strong interest in promoting Irish Breastfeeding, she really wanted to get involved and put together a site in Cork. Despite Maria having only ten days to organize it, the event was a huge success, with 98 mothers and 106 babies and children sitting down to nurse at Mahon Point Shopping Center.

In 2011, Maria (who is Co-Chair of Friends of Breastfeeding) asked FoBF to get involved and make it a nationwide event. In total, there were 7 venues in Ireland. The Citywest (Dublin) venue was the largest site IN THE WORLD with 146 babies nursing at 11am – with the accolade of second largest site in the world going to Mahon Point (Cork) with 145 babies. How AMAZING is that? Overall, Ireland placed second to Canada in the Challenge as 392 babies around Ireland latched on all at the same time. Considering the population of Canada is 5 times that of Ireland (and their breastfeeding rates are much much higher), I think we can all agree that is a fantastic achievement for Irish breastfeeding mammies.
