Is it your calf muscles or your shins where the pain is? Would a nice hot bath after walking help, it could be just the burn after working out! I couldnt walk up the stairs for 2 days last week as my lower legs were sooo sore… your looking great so stick at it. x#
    Are you drinking enough fluids?

If it’s shin splints they can be extremely painful and there’s nothing you can do until the pain has gone away.

I suffered badly from shin splints last year. I visited my GP and he told me to rest for 3 weeks and everything should be fine…worst possible advice.

I changed the ground I was exercising on – going from hard to soft. Have you tried walking on the beach and seeing if the pain is still there?

If its calf pain that can be eased with some good stretching before and after you go for a walk along with a bath when you get home to loosen up the muscles.

    hi Libby,

the pain in your legs can be due to several reasons… before i can suggest a few things could you please answer the following:

    (i hope you dont mind)
when advised to lose weight, how much weight was suggested? many times when people carry a lot of extra weight it puts a lot of strain in the joints, specially kness and ankles.

when walking, what sort of shoes (brand) do you wear?

have you ever heard of barefoot training? I went to New York in June to become the first qualified barefoot training instructor in ireland….not going to bored you to tears with the details but the idea is that your feet are the foundations of your body… if all of the muscles, ligaments and tendons from ankles down are weak (and they are if you always wear shoes and runners) it creates an imbalance and when people try to do soome activities it will result on pain in different parts of the legs.

    looking forward to your reply

If it’s your weight (like me) that put pressure on legs, why don’t you try to cycle or swimm pressure on legs and joints will be lighter.

Best of luck with slimming wolrd and getting fitter step by step.
I’m on the same boat, joined slimming world, worked well at the beginnning, have to go back to it, took a break from it and I shouldn’t have.

    Thanks everyone

I have a lot of weight to lose between 7 & 8 stone..

The Beach is good when walking,
Yes i have noticed the difference in Shoes while walking.. i have a pair of sketchers which give a lot of support and pain isn’t too bad but i have a pair of cushion walkng shoes ( i walked around florida in March in them) and the pain is worse..

I try different routes while walking because i have a strong tendancy to get bored very easily..

Don’t get me wrong – this is a health matter i have to do this… no excuses at all allowed

ok Libby the first thing to do if you want to keep up walking is to change shoes…. please stay away from any of those fancy brands that promise to tone up your legs and bums (sketchers, reebok tone, MBT)… and get yourself a barefoot shoe…

you have 2 options here… you can go for the best (although they look a bit weird, everyone in the fitness world has them and many runners in the drogheda area are now running with them)..they are called 5 fingers and it looks like a glove for your feet.

The second (less extreme option) is to get a pair of Nike Free. Nike has teamed up with top barefoot experts and they have designed a type of runner that is the closest to being barefoot..

i have a pair of each of hte above… i’ve heard jjb in dundalk have the nike free..otherwise you can get them on line…not too expensive about 60-70 euro.

the main reason why you need to change shoes is because the excess weihgt you are carrying is having a huge effect on your joints. These shoes will help you balance all of the muscles in your legs and within a few weeks you should fee a difference in your knees.

Regarding exercise, try to vary what you do so you dont get bored… walking alone can be very monotonous… have you considered coming down to do a class?

I would to do a class , but i am afraid as i am so unfit and i need to get my heart sorted out first, i have to see a specialist….

I will be down as soon as i get a class

Thanks for the advice on the runners, i will look into getting appropriate shoes.. i paid over €100 for these sketchers – they are so comfartable

    Appreciate all your help..
    Thanks

    hi Iibby

myself and sabbi were talking about this last week…about the misconception of having to get fit before you attendclasses.

You would be surprised of how many ‘new exercisers’ we get in the doors every week… if you think people start with us once they’ve lost the weight and are fit, then yo uhave the wrong idea.

I am currently working very close with 2 of my clients who each needs to loose about 6-7 stone… both none exericisers and huge fan of very well known diet groups…

in 4 months each of them has lost 3-4 stone by eating properly and exercising 3 times per week.

    perfect Libby,

let me know how you get on with them…they might feel a bit weird the first few days, as it’s almost being barefooted… but once you get used to them, you will never wear another runner 🙂
