Just trying to work out what is a high ESB bill or an average bill? Talking to some family and they think around the €200 would be a very, very low bill if not at home all day and not washing etc. for a family, and €300 or slightly upwards would be a normal bill for a house with someone at home all day and washing machine etc. on the go all the time with young children. I thought my own bill was high and we are always turning off this and that. I turn off the hall lights (spots) and put on the lamp instead as it is only 1 bulb. Also have energy bulbs, have the new type water tank etc. Trying to work out are we doing enough and is our bill average for our family size.
November 21, 2009 at 1:46 pm #82180pumbaingaMemberWell,we are family of 5+1(doggy) and i am at home every day with my little one and our average bill would be 100 E for 2 monts,we read our metter constantly so thiese are real numbers!

November 21, 2009 at 2:22 pm #82183KateMemberWe are with ESB, €100 per month, will definately be looking into airtricity if they’re any way cheaper, Didnt know they did it out this way.
November 21, 2009 at 2:26 pm #82184opaljhMemberair tricity are great they are 16% cheaper than esb & its taken by direct debit & dont even get a bill ! im over the moon as we were paying nearly 200 euro every 2 months for our 3 bed with esb & now we are in a 4 bed & its cheaper!! 😮 😮 😮
November 22, 2009 at 12:21 pm #82206AnonymousInactiveDefinately couldnt have a bill that low, 50 a month is impossible for us. We have older children with computers on, 4 mobile phones to be charged, 2 tv’s used in the evenings and lights on in few rooms at night depending on where people are. I would do a lot of washing per day and use tumble drier to air off nearly line dry clothes. Feels high but can’t work out how to get it much lower. Cook using gas hob too, and don’t have electric fire, heaters etc.
How do people keep it at a 100 for two months???
November 22, 2009 at 12:25 pm #82207GrainneMemberOur esb bill would be around the €80-€100 and never over even at xmas time when i have more lights on than sense. Im at home most days with 2 young boys and a washing and dishwasher that never seems to be off. What i usually do is throw €10 into the post office for esb every week and at the end of 2 months when my bill comes in , i rarely have to pay anything. In the summer our bill would be approx €40-€60. The only thing to watch out for with esb is that they can sometimes get it wrong with your bill so always check your meter yourself so you dont get bucked. My mother hardly uses any lecy but her las bill was near€200. So just be careful and double check before you hand over your cash.
November 22, 2009 at 12:50 pm #82209Taylor5MemberMy bills would be around 180 bimonthly at this time of the year, over the 200 mark for the xmas ones. I dont find the elecrity cost too high as I use the dryer about 10 tmes a week for 1.5 hours at a time.
i always use energy saving bulbs, turn orr main lights an use side lights and make sure ALL chargers are turned off and not on standby.I WOULDNT touch Airtricty with a barge pole. I went to change over in August but rang up withinn the cooling off period and cancelled my change over. This didnt however stop them taking almost 100 euro from my account, I’ve been promisted it would have been back in my account last week but NO… Three weeks now and Im still ringing and waiting for the meony to be refunded. I know mistakes happen but i wish they were as quick giving back the money as they were taking it
November 22, 2009 at 3:21 pm #82216AnonymousInactiveGood god HOW do you get your esb bills to 100 euro…… a cheap bill for me is 200 every 2 months…….
November 22, 2009 at 5:26 pm #82217pumbaingaMemberI would suggest to switch lights off in empty rooms and read your metter!!!! we have never had more than 100 (well maybe 10 E more). We have 1 tv, 1 computer which is on all day, 4 bedrooms and low bill, happy us 😀
Month ago we swithched to Board Gas electricity and now our bill will be 14 % cheaper for the first year and deffo cheaper than ESB for the next 5 years.November 22, 2009 at 9:55 pm #82237Taylor5MemberI have one tv on at a time, we turn lights off when we leave a room, ds turns the tv off when he leaves a room…. i do use the dryer but its my gas bills that i’d love to reduce
Iv changed over to Bord Gais for electricy supply but only a two weeks now, I will take back what I said about Airtricty, money back in Account on friday. All happy nowNovember 23, 2009 at 10:27 am #82269yummymummyMemberMe and my ds at home in 3bed semi. My last esb was €30!! 🙂 and no not estimated either.
Dont use emersion, have all energy saving bulbs, dont leave lights on, have no dryer or dishwasher etc etc. The dearest bill ive ever had for esb was €89 and that was about 2 years ago in a rented house.
my last gas bill was €40 and not estimated either. I think cos its a new house and a new boiler which has a temp gauge so when house reaches 22-23 degrees it knocks itself off till temp in house drops and then comes back on.
Next bills due begin of dec prob be dearer than the above with it being darker and colder.
November 23, 2009 at 3:41 pm #82289AnonymousInactiveDear god, just wtiched over to Bord Gais for Electricty for 1 1/2 months €110. Mine can be €250 every 2 months. In saying that DH cant turn off a light. If i go out a night i come home and every light in the house is on. Keep saying it to him but in one ear etc. We use the dryer a lot, dont use immersion, so its just all the lights!!
November 23, 2009 at 3:54 pm #82291chewieodieParticipantwe are in a 3 bedsemi….. and there are 4 of us…. dishwasher on every day, and washer and drier seem like they are never off…..
we don’t use the electric heating all the time, and never use the immersion heater….. just set the water to heat at particular times of the day…. plus every light bulb is energy saving….
and our bill is never more than E 100 every two months….. 😉
Switched to Bord gais for electricity quite a few months ago…. and very very glad we did! 😆November 24, 2009 at 3:32 pm #82335AnonymousInactivestumped with this one. Going over everything we use. Do use imersion for heating water but on a timer so never left on. Just heat what we need. Always switching things off, lights, tv, computers etc. Fair usage on dishwasher, drier (just for airing what comes in or from clothes horse if bit damp), tv etc. Very conscious of what we use but bill is crazy high. I know at home all day with own children and children I mind. Maybe we do use more because of this.
