DD will be around 28 months when baby arrives and although she will sit in the buggy I always find after awhile she wants out. The main reason I was considering one (and I have one in mind) was for going for walks orfor the grand-parents to use when we are out and about at weekends etc. I have a feeling if I go shopping on my own I will have baby in a sling as I found it so handy for going around with DD.
I suppose I just wonder is DD getting to an age now where she will want to be in the buggy less and less and from experience does anyone know when their toddler/child stop needing/wanting the buggy. Maybe it varies with each child I suppose.
As I say I have a double stroller in mind that is very flexible (can be used as single or double) but just looking for opinions/experiences from those who have usedthem and whether they were a good idea or not.
June 30, 2010 at 10:50 am #96226Ms. MichaelMemberHi there, i was in the same boat as yourself. When my new baby was due my ds was 2 years and 9 months. I panicked and bought a double buggy but the girl in Smyths forgot to explain to me that the buggy only suited a toddler up to 36 months. As my ds is tall for his age he wouldn’t get into it as he said it was too small for him. I did go back to explain nobody told me the age limit but it fell on deaf ears. i was informed that all staff were trained to inform me of the age limits and maybe i didn’t hear properly. So i walked into a different shop and pretended to buy the same buggy and again wasn’t told the age limit only this time i asked and she told me i would be fine with a three year old!! Try your child out in the shop first. My ds just didn’t want to be in the buggy though and i ended up selling it brand new just a while ago. Also work out your lifestyle if you’re a walker or need to walk long distance for schools or shops you probably will need one. But if you use the car and then walk around the shops i wouldn’t bother. You should try allthe websites to see if anyone is getting rid of one for free even.
June 30, 2010 at 8:54 pm #96253scole1Memberi have to recommend the europa love n care, they did have it in smyths for 299e like the phil n teds but seats are bigger and the second seat when infront you can fold the buggy with it attached… but you ca contact the supplier pauline in babydirect.ie the buggy is an australian buggy and have to say i wasn’t sure about getting a double buggy side by side and wasn’t paying the price for a phil n teds….when our eldest was 3.5yrs when ds2 arrived, have to say even now at 4.5yrs we still use with the two kids in it and it’s great comes in very handy, we have had it in wales, portugal down the country and all over the place…the other thing is that it comes with the double seat, raincover a fly net etc highly recommend it…well worth the buy, i think all and allit’s better than the phil n teds and at a fraction of the price too.
just checked on line it’s selling for 199e.so a bargain you will not regret buying it, if you want to see it before you buy pm me and i will give a demo….(i’m not a seller of them just a mom who discovered them here and bought it and have recommended it to others, taylor bought one so she may be able to giver her opinion too on the buggy)
July 1, 2010 at 8:28 am #96271munchinParticipantyou know i think it all depends on how much you believe you’ll use it.
My dd was 2.5yr when babs was born but we hardly ever used a buggy for her at the point so i didn’t want to be spending alot of money on a buggy i would harly use BUT i’m not out and about very often with the 2 kids on my own. so i really only neededsomething for going walking locally or the odd occassion that i was going to be out on my own with both girls.
I got a 2nd hand graco tandem (i call it a train) it’s long and it is heavy but i paid € 30 and i’ve def got my money’s worth out of it. I used it alot last summer locally but this yr if i’m going for a walk dd1 wants to push her own buggy or go on her bike so it’s hardly been used. DD1 really only wants the buggy if she’s tired, 90% of the time if i’m out & about dh is with me and i have her stroller (also €30) in the boot just incase.
oh other thing to keep in mind – at this stage dd2 is a year old and does NOT like being in the back seatJuly 1, 2010 at 1:26 pm #96285WHealth4LifeMemberThanks everyone for the replies. Given me different perspectives which I need. We were thinking of the baby jogger city select but it is very expensive. We had a demo of it out in Family Fare and both myself and DH found it really easy to use. I just don’t want to spend all that money on the double package and find it doesn’t suit our lifestyle or we could have gone a more econmic route with the same result.
Thanks for your experience Ms. Michael although it’s a pity they weren’t more helpful to you in the store. Appreciate your experience and perspective too munchkin, I really do need to sit down and think about what day to day life will be like once baby arrives and whether a double stroller will be of benefit to us.
Scole1 thanks for all the info on the Europa, I checked out LovenCare.ie and it looks great and the price is brilliant. It’s great to have a recommendation on it too. I will show it to DH tonight and maybe we will go have a look at it. Always good to get hands on with products you view online 🙂 If we were getting the baby jogger city select double package (plus car seat) with a few optional extras we would be paying over €1000 and that’s ordering from UK as it is even more expensive here. My Mum is all for us getting it but I am not sure we can justify the cost when we have so many other things to sort out between now and September. I am not keen on Phil and Teds BUT I have to say although Europa is a similar format I am sure it is much better value at €199. Normally when shopping I don’t give a hoot about the brand name as long as the product I want to buy is good quality and worth every penny.
Thanks again, great to have all the info you all posted, will have a good think about it and talk to DH.
July 1, 2010 at 1:51 pm #96286JedtKeymasterI would say yes, I still use our double buggy when my 5 year old gets tired. we live a mile from our local village and I walk in and out alot and my 2 year old goes in the buggy and I bring the extra seat for when my 5 year old gets tired.
I have a Phil & Teds and it can be used as a single or double, I use it mostly as a single now but when my 2 year old was a baby and her sister was 2, we used it so much
You can pick up the one scole has much cheaper than a Phil & Ted and it seems almost the same to me.
Hope that helps!
July 1, 2010 at 4:32 pm #96306mammycoolParticipantHi there,
I have the Phil & Teds. Would not be wild about it at all but it does the job. My dd is now 15 months and ds is 3yrs 3 months. When I am out and about, I put both of them in. They are both very active at this stage and prone to wander or run off in both directions. Impossible to keep your eye on them. The double buggy keeps them contained.
I have to say when dd was newborn, I did not like it at all. She was quite a long baby and always thought she was a bit squashed under him. Once she got to the three month stage and we could put her in the back seat, it was much better. It could also be a bit awkward getting her in and out of the back seat.
July 1, 2010 at 6:49 pm #96309scole1Memberi have the city mini single version and have to say fab love love love it…..
i did though look at the citymini double version, also in family fare and it’s so easy to use and fold etc that’s the best thing about the baby jogger. however the conventional side by side double version of it is actually quite hard to get about in some places, hence we didn’t get it in the end also again the price it is expensive….
i know a girl who had the double city and though she loved it said that it did not fit down isles in some shops, even when the ventured abroad, the problem is the rear wheels are slightly wider, i even find it sometimes difficult if passing another buggy in a shop if i’m out with the city mini, but i wouldn’t trade it, it’s so handy, one hand fold and granny and man proof….if you want to see the europa in person give me a shout….July 24, 2010 at 2:29 pm #97160Trace3004MemberMy two are 15 months apart so I needed one when the get older & bigger it is a killer to push up hills especially on warmer days I ended up getting a small buggy and the oldest fella walked. Sling sounds ideal but think about cold and wet days when baby needs to be well wrapped.
July 25, 2010 at 10:32 am #97188Taylor5Membermy ds was 3 and 2 months when his brother was born, i didnt get a double then but after a few months i did. I would walk to the shops alot and go for walks….. i found ds1 was okay for walking but the weather was terrible and a walk to the shops meant him nearly blowing away or getting soaked. I find if you have to go to the bank etc much easier if you have a double, you are in and out of the shops in no time.
I will second the the europa love n care… great for the price. its a single or a double if you want. Ds1 is 5 now i still use as a double but ds2 in the front and all the bits and bobs in the rear seat…. I did pop ds1 and ds2 into the buggy one day, we were at the Zoo for the whole day and it was roasting hot, we were parked a good bit away and the kids were falling asleep standing up after a long day out…. ds1 4.5 at the time climbed in and fell asleep and we popped ds2 in the rear, both fast asleep by the time we got to the car, so a life saver iykwim
Great buggy for the beach and off roadAugust 23, 2010 at 9:03 am #98379shinners75MemberMy girl was 26 months when my second was born. There is no way on earth to keep her in a buggy anymore. So I bought a buggy step for her to stand on when we are out and about and it is great. She hops off when she wants to run around and then when she is tired she just gets back on the step and is pushed along.
A double buggy would have been a waste of money for me plus I would have had to keep it in the car or shed, they take up so much space. I find the buggy step is great for us. -
