Not sure where to post this query – but this one mentions fertility so ….
Has anyone used Mirena???
My ob-gyn was inclined to recommend it over the pill.I’ve three little kids, including a small baby, & have no intentions of another addition in the immediate future (after that, who knows! But will have to work on dh!
) but am a bit worried about side-effects etc. Any info appreciated. Thanksi was recommended that too, but haven’t gone for it as of yet….
anyone i know that has it fitted has been fine….but will be interesting to hear people’s experience with it

Been there, done that, got the "coil" (so to speak)…. 😉
I think it is great…. however, a couple of things to bear in mind…
It can take a few months for your body to adjust to it, you are after all being given a constant dose of hormones… so, some gals would put on some weight ( 😳 … me being one of them)…. also, your periods can lessen, increase or stop all together….. it took a couple of months, in addition to some tablets for this to get resolved for me, as AF was arriving every two weeks 👿 after going on the coil…. but that seems to be hunky dory now….Initially I was kind of kicking myself for getting it done, and now, I couldn’t be happier…. 😆 But as I said, each individual reacts differently. You could have none of the above….
Would I do it again? A resounding YES! Love the fact that I can’t "forget" to take it… and should you decide to have another bundle to add to your family… you can get it removed and effectively the next day you are "ready to go" again… no waiting like with the pill for things to get back to normal.

Hi Pookie not much help on the mirena i’m afraid just not for me but just to say Chewoidie – not everyone has to wait on the pill – ok for most people it can take a few months for the pill to leave their system BUT after taking the pill for 10years – i stopped and got pregnant immediately which i thought was a fluke BUT the same also happened my sister on her 2nd pregnancy – so it can happen.

I got the mirena 2 weeks ago. I have two small children ages 5months and 22months. Was on the pill when concieved both of them.
The fitting was a bit uncomfortable for me because Im only 21 so have never got a smear test but was told if you have had a smear its easy enough.
I know its expensive too (over 500euro i think) but if you have a medical card its all covered so you dont have to pay anything.
I have had no major pain, a few cramps here and there and a little spotting but thats about it.
Its brilliant because now I dont have to worry about anything. Its there for the next 5yrs and you can just forget about.
SuzieQhi i got it 3 years ago after my last child ,like you i was very worried about the side-effects ,i google it at the time and nearly didnt get it ,all the side-effects that was on the internet ,like hair falling out etc. but have to say its great no problem whatsoever.i dont really get my periods every month ,but maybe 2 – 3 time a year i might get them and in 2 years time when this 1 is due to come out i get a new 1 put back in ..
Interesting….. Still haven’t made up my mind….Must consider my options…. Will report back later.

I haven’t had the coil but I had just been on the on the pill for a year or so but the hormones just didn’t react well with me so I switched to natural birth control so no side effects just take your temp so not invasive either! Would recommend it 100% and it can be ass effective as the pill if you use it right! If you want more info I would love to share!!

I had the Mirena in for over 2 years…
It is expensive enough, €120 for the mirena itself (get it on drug refund scheme so that’s all you pay) and then the doctor I got cost €110 to get it fitted and for the check afterwards too. (My own gp didn’t do it.)
You need to get it fitted while you have your period, and I found that very uncomfortable, you get some strong pains while its been fitted. My periods stopped with it (which was great!), I put on a small bit of weight while on it and when I got it out I realised I wasn’t ‘myself’ as I felt so different afterwards.
I got it out early because I felt it had ‘moved’ – so went to the doctor who put it in and she couldn’t find it, had an internal scan and it was still there thank God. (That was a worrying couple of weeks!!!).
I decided a couple of months later to get it removed, but ended up going to a specialist in the Hermitage Clinic and paying him €200 to remove it!It was great for the time I had it in though..
My sister is on her second one now and never had an ounce of trouble and pain! So everyones experiences can be so different!
My cousin had the coil put in too and it moved and she got pregnant!! She had a very small baby at the time and was planning her wedding and it really threw everything up in the air for her. They had not planned anymore babies so she was not a fan of it! She had to have a lot of scans during her pregnancy to see where it was (at one stage it was up under her ribs!) because they could not move it or take it out while she was pregnant. She had an awful time – have to say, that put me right off it. She got it out after she gave birth and is fine now but it really did not work for her at all.
My hubby had a vasectomy two years ago and it was the best thing for us. Took only an hour and hey presto, no more babies! Totally liberating not to have to worry about contraception anymore. It gives us such freedom and tbh, I did not like the idea of a coil or the pill or any of that – I had done enough having 4 babies, it was his turn to step up and in fairness to him, he did not mind. He said it was only fair after all I had been through.
We did look at all the options, like sterilization too but in a lot of women that does not work. It fails about 1 in 200 cases and a woman has to be put under general anesthetic for it, so its a complicated process and not always successful. Whereas vasectomies are done under local anesthetic and only around 1 in 3,000 fail and need to be repeated. It is much less invasive.
That’s what worked for us anyways….HTH 🙂
