February 9, 2010 at 12:33 pm #88484happymumblemumParticipantLarge Book of nursery rhymes..there is one called Mother Goose and other rhymes it is illustrated by Axel Sheffler the same man who illustrated Gruffalo etc.
There are hundreds of rhymes in there with a little story along side it told by Mother Goose.I always read nursery rhymes to my dd from being very young to the present day and at the last parents evening her teacher said thats why she was an exceptional reader.
She has seen over the years, that kids who knew all the nursery rhymes were the best readers…used to think it was very old fashioned when my mum read them to her but I am glad I kept it up.Dinasaurs love underpants is also a very good book..as is anything by Julia Donaldson..such as the Smartest Giant in Town etc etc…

Yummy your son might like The Horrible Histories by Terry Deary or the the Charlie Small series both available at Waterstones.
Anyone who ever needs any help to find the right books for kids don’t hesitate to ask me and if you are in Waterstones ask for a children’s bookseller to assist you, there are four of us! Don’t forget to check the children’s noticeboard in store for up coming events.
There are two kids bookclubs one for age 9-12 and one for teens and for the younger ones we have storytime every Saturday at 11am and 3pm
