Interesting programme was on Wednesday night (on one of the sky digital channels, not sure which) think it’s going to be on for a few weeks. It’s focussing on people’s obsession with appearance. In the first show, they got a girl who wants to get a few cosmetic procedures done. She wouldn’t leave the house in the morning without spending 90 minutes on make up and hair extensions. They paired her with a guy who had a horrific work accident years ago and got very badly burned with total scarring of his face. The interraction of them was great and the lessons learned interesting. The clips from next week’s show make it look like it’ll move it up a notch! Worth a watch

Think this is on channel 4, Wednesdays at 8pm. This week’s looks interesting. More details on channel4.com, search documentaries and then the letter "b". Full title is beauty and the beast – Ugly face of prejudice.

Anyone see last night’s episode?? They put a woman who allegedly has spent over £500,000 on cosmetic procedures over the years to stay looking "great", with a woman who, as a result of an infant aggressive facial sarcoma had drastic surgery that left her quite disfigured. Ironically, the "model and socialite" suggested they go in for a treatment which included a digital analysis of the face. It turned out that the one who suggested it was doing all the wrong things and causing sub surface problems to her skin and build up of bacteria, the one with the disfigurement had practically perfect skin! Next week’s one looks interesting!

This was a brill show. Really brought home how you feel about your physical appearance is so much more than how you actually look. At one point a comment was made about the 50yr old lady who really did act like a young teenager. I had to remind myself she was really 50. when they aged her you could literally see all her insecurities laid bare.

Yeah, the ageing was done excellent! My sil did that kind of theatrical make up in Dun Laoire college, she made a 16 yr old look about 65 for a project, it was amazing.

The 50 yr old’s immaturety and self-centeredness really showed through!

Anyone see last night’s episode? The irony of how insecure of her looksthe beauty queen was compared to the confidence and self contentment of the guy with treacher collins syndrome!

fab show really is good show, amazing to see those who seem to be quite cocky about themselves (as we’d precieve) are not as secure in themselves, they are the ones that are wearing a mask….

those who have facial disfigurement how confident they are and i admire them not pity them, really enjoying the shows, have only seen the last 2 shows was interested since your posts….

a firned of mine had a birth mark on her face, it wasn’t that bad, i remember her getting itremoved as a child, and the scar is far worse than the birth mark that was there, she is that selfconcious about it she wears her hair a certain way to hide it….roll on a few years later and she suffered a brain hemerage and lost speech, relearned how to walk, talk, use her arms again, and is doing great, she has slight speech slurr now you would’nt realise, and you know what the scar she once hid from people she no longer does, she’s realised it’s part of her and that the potential loss of her life, and her abilities weighed more than the hiding of her scar…she is a beautiful girl both inside and out, as nobody ever asked her about her scar, or as far as i know ever felt sorry for her, but it’s great seeing how confident she is now…

i have a wonky ear, one i hid for years and years, never would wear my hair up, as kids would slag me off, now i don’t care, most people are too polite to say anything, but sometimes people as oh whathappened to your ear, and when i say it’s from birth they say oh oh sorry, and get embarrassed…but hey, i’ve flab etc etc, i suppose i’ve let myself go compared to how i used to be, i’m happier in myself even though i’d like some physical changes but happiness wise, i’m happy…i could be dead tomorrow so i’m living for today…. 😆

Yeah scole, I think the one thing the show does best is to make people think deeper than the shallow stereotype that they show! Did you see how thin the girl was that wanted liposuction? 😯
And as the shows go on, it’s clear that the so called "disfigured" people are more comfortable with their looks than the insecure ones!

The regular guy with the disfigurement does great presentations proving and disproving myths about attitudes. Last night’s job hunting and giving away free hotdogs was very interesting!

If anyone wants to catch up, you can watch the earlier episodes on channel4.com

yeah FC i thought that was very good, as the girl who was real thin was still trying to get thinner, and defo an underlying mental problem there, ie eating disorder etc..iykwim, god if i was as skinny as her i’d be delighted…lol

think the experiement was a great one, but it doesn show that people can be very skin deep judgemental sad to think…..

i wonder did those who took the hot dog from the facial disfigured guy take it coz they felt sorry and were hardly going to say on tv that’s why they took the food….

i think at the end of the day people will always look twice regardless, i think it’s our natural curiosity that makes us do that in all aspects of life, regardless, if the person is drop dead gorgeous or has something different looking to them….

    great show though

never seenit but might start sounds good…

I know a girl, she worked in olol in the file room for a few years, she was burnt in a fire as a child, she is the happiest and most confident person i know… i know it was hard for her as a child with rotten road kill wigs, now days wigs are sooo good you dont notice, when im talking to her i dont notice the burns as her eyes are stunning and dance with life and she just oozes happiness, i think thats what counts really.

I wanted a boob job for years, told my dh i wanted it for my 40th birthday, but i told him to stop saving in my birthday fund… i seen a programme on Ch4 about women who were left with horrific scars after all kinds of Cosmetic work… they were happy women before who just wanted to improve, but after they were left as shadows of their past selves, some wouldnt even leave the house!!!

I do think its about what you feel on the inside… was up in my mams the other day, she was calling into a neighbour to do "a bit of shopping for her" I laughed and said "mam she is about 10 years younger then you!" She laughed and said "I might be 72 but i feel like a teenager!" 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

well what did you think of the recent show…the chap with the burns and the surgery obsessed girl, she is unreal, so self obsessed….

That was an unusual episode, in that even with his burn mark and prostetic ear, he looked great. (dd had a few extra superlatives 😆 )

I reckon he could strut on a catwalk and nobody would think anything of it, so it was interesting how he would be perceived by the "model". I felt she kept using the "I was bullied" line to justify everything. And her self-centered attitude was illustrated by her not realising that he takes off his prostetic ear….despite the fact he had shown her in the bathroom that he takes it off and cleans it an night!

Would be great to see him achieve his dream in the 2012 olympics!

Well that 6th and final episode was last night, anyone see it? They saved the best for last and the guy who has been a big part of the series with various experiments was one of the actual subjects last night. Funny how people perceive themselves different to how others see them. When the girl took off her make up (for the first time in years in front of someone) she looked great, actually more naturally beautiful!
