Back to School with Kellogg’s – A Top Class Start!

We all know that tight schedules and chaotic mornings can lead to breakfast not being a top priority in many households. As September draws closer, and families start to prepare to go back to school and get organised for the new school year, the role of breakfast becomes increasingly important to ensure that children get a good start to the day.

Throughout the world, nutritionists and dietitians agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast means ‘breaking the fast’. Children may have gone up to 10 hours without food and drink, hence energy reserves can be low. It is recommended that all ages eat a healthy balanced breakfast, ideally in the form of complex carbohydrate foods e.g. starch and fibre.

Fortified breakfast cereals are a great way to obtain important nutrients, as well as vitamins and minerals. They are also typically low in fat, and easy to prepare first thing in the morning. Research has shown that eating breakfast cereals can help kids to concentrate and stay on track. High fibre and wholegrain cereals are also great option.

Kellogg’s cereals provide at least 25% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for 6 B vitamins and 17% of the RDA for iron per serving. And by the end of 2013 all of the Kellogg’s kid & family cereals will have vitamin D too. With the latest research showing that 9 out of 10 Irish children do not get enough Vitamin D in their diet, it’s great to know that with a simple serving of Kellogg’s cereals, kids are being given a great start to their day.

    The Benefits of Eating Breakfast
    1. Breakfast sets you up with energy for the morning ahead.
    2. Breakfast can help improve your attention and concentration
    3. Eating breakfast is a great habit to develop for any age group

It doesn’t have to be complicated – Try a fortified breakfast cereal with semi-skimmed milk and chopped banana or a handful of sultanas for a sweeter taste. It’s better to eat something rather than nothing. On the odd occasion when you’re late for the bus, make sure you grab something from the fruit bowl, rather than the sweet shop.

    Back to School Tips
    1. Preparation is everything – the key to a smooth morning routine is preparation the night before. Prepare everything the night before including clothes, shoes and school bag. Why not set the table for breakfast before going to bed.

    2. Give your kids the best start to the day with breakfast. It doesn’t take long to prepare and will help them to get the most from their morning at school.

    3. Get stocked up. If your kids take their own packed lunch to school then stock up now on healthy snacks, lunchbox items, and other essentials so you don’t spend your time running to and from the supermarket.

Our kids really like Mini Max, and they seem to keep them going for a good while. Its so important to get something decent into them before school or they will be tired and unable to concentrate properly.

dd2 is another story – she’s never been a breakfast person even as a baby so it’s always a struggle to get something into her 🙄 lunch and dinner is never ever a problem she just doesn’t like to eat first thing
