    Hi all,

Im writing a piece for a local paper this week and have just found out that many people are entitled to a back to school allowance but that because they are working, they assume they are not and therefore, do not apply for it.

If anyone wants more information, contact the local welfare office in Drogheda and get a form and see if you’re entitled. You could be 200 euro (or more) better off and I think its means tested so if you have high rent or mortgage, they take this into account in your favour.

Anyway – wanted to let you all know incase you miss the piece in the paper

    Thanks,
    Siobhan

Yes its means tested but the limit for a single parent is very low, so say you worked 20 hours (on min wage) and had your one parent payment, already you are over the limit for a single parent which is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have already forked out €200 for my ds to go back to school and still have to get runners and a coat.
But sure ill not maon I have never been entitled to this so what ive never gotten ill not miss, but it sure would come in handy!

Income limitsTo qualify for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, your total household income must be below the amounts set out in the table below.

Your total household income means your main social welfare or Health Service Executive payment, the income of any dependent children on Youthreach and any other income you may have including wages (before tax but excluding PRSI and reasonable travelling expenses)

Any income you get by way of rent or mortgage interest supplement, Family Income Supplement, Blind Welfare Allowance, Rehabilitative Training Allowance, rehabilitative employment (up to €120 per week), Home Help, Domiciliary Care Allowance and Mobility Allowance is not counted.

Couple with Income limit in 2008
    1 child €497
    2 children €521
    3 children €545
    4 children €569
*limit increased by €24 for each additional child

Lone parent with Income limit in 2008
    1 child €348
    2 children €372
    3 children €396
    4 children €420*

*limit increased by €24 for each additional child

The rate of the allowance paid for each eligible child aged 2-11 before 1st October 2007 is €200 from June 2008.

The rate of the allowance paid for each eligible child aged 12-17 before 1st October 2007 is €305 from June 2008.

The allowance is also paid at the higher rate for children aged 18-22 if they are in full-time education, for whom a child dependant allowance is payable

    hi all,

check out shoes direct, in M1 retail park beside Smyths and Heatons. FThey have a fb range of back to school shoes at brilliant prices. they even have skechers, dora, bob the builder and barbie ranges etc. They look good, seem like good quality and the kids love them.

    Might save you a fortune!
