Was discussing this with someone and they felt that you could get all you needed in a supermarket these days and that butcher shops have had their day. I still use a butcher and much prefer seeing the meat, choosing what cut I want and how much etc. Do buy some packaged meat but wouldnt do without a butcher, especially for mince when I can see if he’s making it up what goes in. I’m funny about buying mince in a supermarket.

I’m also a big believer in going to the butcher. I like that I can see the meat laid out. That I can ask the butcher for a specific joint of meat or if what I want isn’t on view, they’ll go back and check for it.
Occassionally I buy from supermarkets but more often than not I head to the butcher.

meat for some reason tastes different from a supermarket, also you can get better deals from a butcher i feel, also you become familiar with the butcher and they do ya deals and you can be sure of where the meat is coming from….our butcher does great range of variety and adds his own recipes etc etc so not just buy the meat good luck gives you ideas for meals…wouldn’t get that in a supermarket….`

    so i prefer a butcher

I worked for a wholesale butcher who supplied steaks, roasts etc to the Hotel trade for years as ast. manager.

I know my beef, I know what its supposed to smell like, what colour it should be etc. There is a difference with your local butcher and the supermarket.

Supermarket is central buying in vast quantities. Small Butchers tend to go to visit the factories and select their carcases. Yes its dearer but its got more experience in the purchasing, its personally selected in most cases and thus more man hours, more cost.

If your buying however from a Butcher with a number of shops, perhaps located in a number of towns, you might as well be using the Supermarket. Stick to your local Butcher, get to know them, if they are sure your money is coming in every week, they will be sure to fill your order in such a way to guarantee your return.

I’ll second what Scole says, cant beat your local butcher… and supermarket meat is rotten 😯 I forgot to call to the butchers a few weeks ago and picked up mince in Tescos…. well the dog got a good feed that night, its smelt like dog meat… so my one and only buy in the supermarket was a short lived one
Just look on the Dublin Road in Drogheda 3 new family butchers…

Actually bit suprised by the pole. Had the idea most people bought from supermarkets for convience and because it has cooking instructions on the packet. 😆

So going to the butcher is not so out of date. As a by the way, does anyone remember their first time buying meat in a butchers. I remember getting my firsthouse, wanting to do ‘the Sunday roast’ thing. I went to the butcher and was amazed at all the different cuts. Got my roast but when I went to cook it realised I didn’t know how 🙁 Ed1…maybe your mam will remember this. I went round to your Mam’s house, borrowed a weighing scales to weight the meat and she told me how manymins. per lb to give it. Turned out lovely and was so proud. Amazing how much I took for granted living at home.

I was the same went to get a roast but it was horrible, rang my mam and she told me I didnt get the best joint that she would use 🙄 you live and learn 😳

I remember my first shopping trip to the local butchers with a note from my mammy and money a note ( must have been 10 pounds or something maybe a 5 as it was the 70’s) gave the list over and the butcher gave me the change and then called me back as i was going out the door with a bag of bones for the dogs….. my dad collected these on a Saturday and I wasnt meant to get them, my back was broken carring it all home 😆 😆 😆

We use the butcher in Wheaton Hall. I’m not very experienced at roasts and things, and just ask him about which cut is good and how long to cook it for – he’s really helpful and friendly. Got a lovely lamb leg at New Year, which I then made some huge pots of soup with the stock from.

Like someone above, if I’m in Superquinn I’ll often buy some meat in there, but I only buy in other supermarkets if I can’t get to Superquinn or the butcher.
