    Dear All,

AIMS Ireland (Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services, Ireland) would like to release the following statement in support of the Survivors of Symphysiotomy and their call for an independent inquiry.

"AIMS Ireland wishes to offer the deepest sympathy to the Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SOS) and full support in their call for an independent inquiry into the horrific, outdated operation performed on nearly 1,500 women in Ireland, often without their knowledge or consent. Minister Harney’s refusal to open a full, independent inquiry on symphysiotomy perpetuates a shocking disregard for the dignity of the survivors and the rights of women in childbirth. AIMS Ireland does not consider the minister’s call for a review by the Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecology adequate and continues to call for an independent review."

This is so so awful, hard to believe this was going on so recently. Those poor women – fair play to them for coming out and trying to rid the stigmas that was attached to survivors of this terrible procedure.
