    Hi
looking 4 advice. My dd is 17 mths old. she had been sleeping thru de night from 5-6 months, with the odd bad night. But last month she was sick (bad cold) and then went straight to teething (cutting some of her last back teeth). This seemes to have started the habbit, & we’re now having a lot of trouble with her wakening up several times a night. its been going on about a month now. So last weekend I decided to tackle this and try to break the cycle. from bits i’ve been hearing over the years, i took this apporach: when she woke i went into her, using a soothing voice, fixed her and tucked her back in without lifting her out of the cot..to say the least she was none too pleased…and would wail..but i’d leave her, and then after about 20 mins of constant wailing, i’d go back in this time, saying nothing put her lying back down with her teddy & soother…again she would wail..well actually hysterical..but i remained strong and let her cry…shes a very head-stong little girl, and cried some of the nights for 2 hrs straight till she finally cried herself to sleep. its so hard letting her be that upset..but i was told to leave her. anyways she slept thru one night but is still going strong and i’m on day 6! am i doing the right thing? Help i’m so tired!!!!!!!

As long as there is nothing wrong with her (ie she is not sick) then its the only way!! My son who is now 4 went through it before he turned 1 and it was a nightmare..but we stuck with it and it worked..he is now a fantastic sleeper (even asks to go to bed!!)..however son number two is a disaster but we cannot try anything yet as he has had constant ear infections for the last 6 months!! Whenever he gets better we will try this and I have no doubt that it will work…but I am hearing your pain…the tiredness is like torture!!!!

Oh Wonderwoman, I feel for you.

Tiredness is awful but stick with it. Its hard but you’ll get through it.

We used the lay down approach. This is where you keep your hand on baby’s back or tummy, depending on which way they sleep, and you keep on saying its time for sleep.

I felt like a lunatic when my 2 year old was screaming at me to get out of her bed while I was constantly repeating over and over ‘its ok, mammy’s here, its time for sleep….’ ‘its ok, mammy’s here, its time for sleep….’ ‘its ok, mammy’s here, its time for sleep….’

But, eventually it worked and now she sleeps all night (most nights) in her own bed

….except when her blanket falls off her or her dolly falls out of her bed and then she screams the house down and we run in, thinking something awful is happening and she shrugs and asks us to fix her blanket or pick up her dolly. Total drama queen – don’t know where she gets it from 🙂

    Good luck!

You have to ignore it, just as you are doing.

You are doing exactly the right thing. And remember, that although you are going thru short term pain, dd will revert to the sleeping thru you want eventually (7-10 days right in my exp, at the outside 14) and then you’ve (again) given her the gift of being able to put herself to sleep. V important.

Have the courage of your convictions – you’ll be posting about your success here in no time!

    Good luck with it!

thanks everyone! well she slept thru last night…but she did that monday & reverted back…so i’m afraid to get my hopes up! but at least i got sleep last night and will b more able 4 tonight if she starts again. Here’s hoping for the positive. its so funny though..myself & dh opened our eyes this morning at about 7 & we were whispering to each other did she sleep…we were so confused 😕 😆

anyway i really aprreciate everyones feedback.
