Irish Cancer Society visits Dundalk company Ovelle Pharmaceuticals to launch their partnership

Dundalk-based company Elave skincare (manufactured by Ovelle Pharmaceuticals) today (23rd April 2013) launched its partnership with the Irish Cancer Society’s Survivorship Programme for the second year. The launch, which took place at Ovelle’s headquarters on Coes Road in Dundalk, was hosted by special guest and local Dundalk girl Dearbhla Lennon.

The Irish Cancer Society’s partnership with Elave means that from 1st May to the end of June 2013, €1 from every Elave Shower Gel 250ml, Shampoo 250ml and Intensive Cream 125g sold will go to the Society’s Survivorship Programme. The Survivorship Programme provides practical and emotional one-to-one support for those newly diagnosed with cancer by people who have undergone cancer treatment themselves.
Since the programme started in 1979, it has helped thousands of newly diagnosed cancer patients. Being diagnosed with cancer can sometimes be a lonely and frightening experience. All of the Society’s survivorship volunteers have had a cancer diagnosis and know what this news can mean. A one to one conversation with someone who has gone through it can make a huge difference at a very difficult time. All of the volunteers are carefully selected and trained to give support, practical information and reassurance to those newly diagnosed with cancer.
“We’re delighted to have Elave on board again this year for the Survivorship Programme,” said Emma Barrett, Corporate Partnership Manager with the Irish Cancer Society. “One of our key goals for 2013, as we celebrate our 50th birthday, is to grow our Survivorship Programme. Making this type of support available has proven to make such a difference to people who have just been diagnosedand the partnership with Elave helps us raise awareness about the programme and also contributes to the much-needed funds which allow us to keep it up and running” she said.

The makers of Elave, Ovelle Pharmaceuticals based in Dundalk, Co. Louth have been manufacturing sensitive skincare solutions in Ireland since 1934. Elave is committed to providing skincare products that are free from harsh chemicals that are linked to flare up in sensitive skin. Our skincare ranges have a strong export presence and in 2012 we have opened up new markets in the US, Europe and China.

“We’re really happy to be on board with the Irish Cancer Society’s Survivorship Programme again this year” said Joanna Gardiner, Elave’s Managing Director. “It was a great success last year as the partnership makes sense to people and the Survivorship Programme provides targeted specialised support to the people going through this difficult and challenging time. As people go through treatments for Cancer their skin can become very dry and sensitive and through this initiative Elave can help raise much needed funds & also raise awareness that Elave is safe to use on your skin while going through Cancer treatments. ” she said.

Elave Shower Gel 250ml, Shampoo 250ml and Intensive Cream 125g will be available in all major pharmacy outlets including major chains such as Boots, Doc Morris, McCabe’s, Sam McCauley’s and Bradleys from May. The Elave Shower Gel 250ml is priced at €7.10, the Elave Shampoo 250ml at €7.10 and the Elave Intensive Cream 125g at €8.49.

    About Elave

Ovelle Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Elave skincare have been providing sensitive skincare solutions since 1934. That is why Elave has dedicated itself to redefining safer sensitive skincare without harsh chemical ingredients that are linked to flare up in sensitive skin. We knew the body and especially the face can be extra sensitive to harsh foaming agents, preservatives and perfumes. Elave’s multi-action formula hydrates, softens and calms the skin, however delicate, every day.

    Cancer in Ireland

Ireland’s cancer rate is one of the highest in the world. One in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer during our life time and it is estimated that by 2020, 43,000 new cases will be diagnosed. Latest data from the National Cancer Registry (NCRI) shows that 33,741 people were diagnosed with cancer in 2010..These stark figures mean that there is an ever increasing demand for the direct patient care services provided by the Irish Cancer Society.

    Survivors Supporting Survivors
Survivors Supporting Survivors is the Irish Cancer Society’s one-to-one support programme, providing emotional and practical support to newly diagnosed patients. It connects someone going through a cancer diagnosis with someone who has been through a similar diagnosis. This means a cancer patient can speak to someone who really knows what they are going through. All of our volunteers have had a cancer diagnosis; they know what this news can mean. Their passion for the work comes from knowing that one conversation with someone who has been there too can make such a huge difference at a very difficult time.
They do this by taking phone referrals from the Irish Cancer Society’s National Cancer Helpline and other Cancer Information Services as well as through hospital visits, cancer support centre visits, public meetings and presentations to communities and local groups.

All survivors are carefully selected and trained to give support, practical information and reassurance. The Survivors Supporting Survivors programme has trained volunteers available across the country.

One of our key strategic goals for 2013 is to grow our Survivors Supporting Survivors programme. We really want to get the word out about this service in 2013 as having this type of support has been proven to make such a difference to people on a cancer journey.

Last year my mother-in-law had cancer. She had breast cancer and went through a very tough time to overcome it.

She had chemotherpay and radiotherapy and was very unwell for a few months. She lost all her hair, had problems with her skin and was very completely sick with nausea, tiredness and was just totally rundown as she underwent the treatment.

While she was sick and undergoing treatment, she could not bear to use any perfumed products on her skin or scalp. They literally itched and burned her because her skin was irritated from the treatment and so we got her the Elave range of products to try.

She used them and found them excellent. They did not irritate her skin, did not burn or make her skin itchy. She used them throughout her treatment – in particular she used the shampoo, body wash, handwash, moisturiser and facial cleanser.

Thankfully she got the all clear a few months ago and is feeling well now but she has stuck with the Elave range of products; she is converted now to using safe and soft products and I often hear her recommending them to her friends.

We use them on our baby, children and ourselves and we recommend them on Mumstown because we genuinely like them and think they are the best products in the market today – whether you are sick or not!
